Blood Questions

Q: How Much Blood is Needed ?

A: On any given day 34,000 units of red blood cells are needed. In emergency situations, such as war or disasters, the focus of hospitals will change.Necessary surgeries will continue, but some hospitals will be needed to treat disaster victims so they are not available to collect blood.

Q: How Much Blood Collected in One Place is Used to Serve the Needs of Victims Elsewhere ?

A: The First Focus of a blood bank is to serve the needs of patients of the immediate area. I times of a shortage, blood banks are called upon each other to fulfill those emergency needs. A structure is in place to provide this cooperation in times of need.

Q: Can't Blood Be Stored for Disasters ?

A: Whole blood is not stored. Whole blood is separated into its components for both storage and usage.

In normal circumstances someone will need blood every two seconds. The supply of blood is a continous one. Blood cannot be manufactured. Modern medicine requires a continous supply of blood. Patients rely on volunteer donors to save their lives.

Red Cross blood donations increased 21 percent in the past five years. (5.6 million donations in 1997 compared to 6.8 million in 2002.) The number of Red Cross blood donors has also increased 21 percent in the past five years. (3.6 million blood donors in 1997 compared to 4.3 million donors in 2002.) Blood is perishable; our 2002 success does not guarantee supply today. Increased demand coupled with more stringent eligibility guidelines makes it more difficult than ever to ensure that blood is available for every patient. Therefore, the American Red Cross has set a collections goal of 6.8 million units for 2003 and expects a 2-3 percent annual growth rate in collection for the foreseeable future.
