A: Whole blood is not stored. Whole blood is separated into its components for both storage and usage.
Red Cross blood donations increased 21 percent in the past five years. (5.6 million donations in 1997
compared to 6.8 million in 2002.)
The number of Red Cross blood donors has also increased 21 percent in the past five years.
(3.6 million blood donors in 1997 compared to 4.3 million donors in 2002.)
Blood is perishable; our 2002 success does not guarantee supply today.
Increased demand coupled with more stringent eligibility guidelines makes it more difficult
than ever to ensure that blood is available for every patient.
Therefore, the American Red Cross has set a collections goal of 6.8 million units for 2003
and expects a 2-3 percent annual growth rate in collection for the foreseeable future.
