AMERICAN RED CROSS: BACK INJURY PREVENTION

Back injury can occur anywhere, anytime. According to recent studies as reported by the Cable News Network (CNN), four out of five adults in America will suffer from back pain at some stage in their lives. Further studies indicate that back injuries are the leading result of accidents to workers under the age of 45. 20% of all reported occupational injuries and illnesses are due to back injuries, with a total estimated annual cost ranging between $20 billion and $50 billion. Even a minor injury can be costly. This workplace module is an introduction to back injury prevention. This program will help you: Understand the anatomy of the back and causes of back pain. Identify and reduce risk factors for back injury. Learn how to perform simple exercises for stretching and strengthening neck and back muscles to help prevent back injury. Identify ways to change personal habits to avoid back injury.

AMERICAN RED CROSS: MANAGING STRESS

Every one of us experiences stress at some point in our lives - when we work, travel, and spend time with family and friends. Stress is not always harmful, and the amount of stress varies from person to person. But, according to the American Psychological Association (APA), 43% of all adults suffer adverse health effects from stress. The APA also estimates that job stress costs business and industry 300 billion annually due to absenteeism, lower productivity, and workers’ compensation benefits. Chronic and ongoing stress may create problems at home, and can lead to disease and other related conditions, such as high blood pressure, headaches, fatigue, and anxiety. The American Red Cross wants you to learn how to recognize workplace “stressors” so that you can begin to understand and manage stressful situations. This workplace module is an introduction to managing stress and can help you: Recognize the causes and signals of stress. Identify ways to manage stressful situations. Develop personal strategies for managing stress.

AMERICAN RED CROSS: ERGONOMICS

You may already understand the concept of ergonomics. In simple terms, it means improving the fit between your body and an activity. The result of proper ergonomics is increased comfort and efficiency. But ergonomics is not just job-related. By applying ergonomic principles, you can make any task less taxing on your body. This program will help you to know:
