Disaster Services Human Resource (DSHR)
The DSHR system is the pool of trained volunteers that are used for callup for Local, State, or National Disasters. Each DSHR member is allowed to pick three areas that can be used for their specialty training. Their first choice is considered their main specialty. When they are called and agree to serve on a disaster, they are provided with transportation to the site, an allowance for lodging, food, and personal items, required to maintain them while at the remote location.
Required Criteria
- Attained the 'Age of Majority' in state of residence
- Have a Social Security number
- Received a formal education, preferably a high school diploma.
- Have a current First Aid Certificate from Red Cross
- Completed 'Intro to Disaster' and function specific training
- Possess the demonstrated knowledge, skills and abilities listed for each category
- Participate in local unit Disaster Services Program activities
- Be available to serve with little advance notice for 5 days locally or up to 3 weeks nationally
- Be flexible about travel plans and serving on disaster relief operations
- Be willing to travel by common mode transportation to disaster locations
- Willing to live and work under adverse conditions
- Willing to work long hours for extended period with little free time
- Be in good health and complete statement to that effect
- Have a valid e-mail address
- Adhere to standards set by Red Cross
- Sign a 'Code of Conduct and Principles of the Red Cross'
